You’re in the middle of a Business Central implementation. A client asks what the “Gen. Bus. Posting Group” field on the Customer Card actually does — and whether it cascades to sales documents. You open Microsoft Learn. You dig through the property reference. Twenty minutes later, you have an answer.
We built Ask BC so you never lose those twenty minutes again.
Ask BC is a free, AI-powered question-and-answer tool for Business Central professionals. It knows every field, every page action, every table caption and tooltip — not from generic internet training data, but from the actual source code of Microsoft’s BCApps repository. Type a question in plain English. Get an answer grounded in what the system really contains.
It’s live now at 365vanguard.com/ask-bc/.
The Problem: Business Central Is Massive, and Documentation Is Slow
A standard Business Central deployment ships with over 26,000 objects. Tables, pages, reports, codeunits, XMLports — each one packed with fields, actions, and properties that behave differently depending on where they’re used. The “Posting Groups” alone span six different tables with interdependencies that even experienced consultants forget between projects.
The official documentation is thorough — but it’s also enormous and search-driven. You can’t ask it “what happens if I change the Inventory Posting Group on a posted sales shipment?” You have to know which articles to read, in what order, and stitch the answer together yourself.
What this costs in practice:
- Junior consultants spend 30–40% of troubleshooting time just looking up field definitions
- Senior consultants and project managers pay the “context switch” tax every time they stop to search
- End users asking “what does this field do?” can’t easily self-serve — the tooltips help, but they’re one-liners
Ask BC fills that gap. It’s the tool you wish Microsoft Learn had a chat interface for.
How Ask BC Works
Using Ask BC is deliberately simple — no training, no setup, no API keys.
Step 1: Enter your name and email. That’s it. No credit card, no trial expiration, no sales call.
Step 2: Ask any Business Central question. Type like you’re messaging a colleague who’s memorized the entire BCApps repo. “What’s the difference between Transfer Order and Warehouse Shipment?” “Which reports use the Salesperson/Purchaser table?” “What actions are on the Sales Order page and what do they do?”
Step 3: Read the answer. You get a plain-English response that includes the technical name, the caption shown in the UI, tooltip text, any option values, and where the field lives in the object hierarchy. When you need the raw property name for AL development, it’s right there. When you need the user-facing caption for training, that’s there too.
You get 15 free questions per session. After that, you’ll see an option to book a free consultation call with our team — no obligation, no pressure. We built Ask BC to be genuinely useful on its own. The consultation is there if you want it.
Under the hood, we’ve indexed the Microsoft BCApps source code repository — 28,000 AL files, 48,197 fields across 26,997 objects, plus 31,999 page actions. Every query is answered by pulling relevant matches from that indexed data and synthesizing a response. The AI provides the natural language layer, but the facts come from the actual code Microsoft ships.
What Makes Ask BC Different
Generic AI chatbots can talk about Business Central in broad strokes. They’ll give you plausible-sounding answers about standard ERP concepts — but they won’t know that the “Tax Area Code” field on the Customer table has exactly 3 option values, or that Source Code is a flowfield with a specific calc formula, or that the “Undo Receipt” action on the Posted Purchase Receipt page calls codeunit 73.
Ask BC does. Here’s why that matters:
| Capability | Generic AI Chatbot | Ask BC |
|---|---|---|
| Source of truth | Internet training data (likely outdated) | Current BCApps source code, fully indexed |
| Field-level accuracy | Guesses field names and relationships | Retrieves exact property names, tooltips, and option strings |
| Page actions | May invent actions that don’t exist | Indexed 31,999 real page actions with captions |
| Table/field coverage | Spotty — popular tables only | Indexed 26,997 objects, 48,197 fields |
| Audit trail | None — you can’t verify the source | Every answer is grounded in retrievable source code locations |
Three things make the difference:
-
Source-grounded retrieval. We don’t ask the LLM to “know” Business Central. We ask it to explain what the indexed source code already contains. When you ask about a field, the system retrieves the actual AL object definition, tooltip, caption, and option string — then the AI wraps that in natural language. The facts aren’t generated. They’re retrieved.
-
Comprehensive indexing. We parse the AL files themselves, not the documentation about the AL files. This means we catch properties, relationships, and patterns that documentation pages often summarize away.
-
Plain English output, technical precision. Every answer balances accessibility with accuracy. A business analyst and an AL developer should both walk away with what they need.
Real-World Use Cases
Ask BC isn’t theoretical. Here’s how people are using it today:
The troubleshooting consultant. You’re on a client call and they say “the system won’t let me post this — it mentions something about Dimension Set ID.” You pull up Ask BC, type “What is Dimension Set ID and how does it relate to the General Journal?” In seconds, you have the field definition, the table relationships, and enough context to diagnose the issue without putting the client on hold.
The trainer onboarding new users. Instead of creating a glossary of 200 common fields by hand, you use Ask BC to pull field definitions, captions, and tooltips on demand. It’s your instant reference while building training materials.
The developer learning AL. You encounter a table property you haven’t seen before. Rather than searching through Microsoft Docs, you ask Ask BC in conversational terms. It gives you the AL property name, the table it belongs to, and the tooltip — all of which you can copy directly into your development environment.
The implementation team preparing a gap analysis. During discovery, the client describes a business process. You ask Ask BC whether the standard BC objects support that process — “Can the Planning Worksheet generate purchase orders directly?” — and get an answer grounded in what the base application can actually do, not what a sales demo showed.
